Instagram

Guide

Instagram is a popular social media platform, launched in 2010 and created and developed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Users are able to share photo and video memories to their followers and it provides features that help the user to enhance content that they want to share. After Facebook, Instagram is the most used social media application and its numbers are rising. The app is primarily used on mobile devices such as phones and tablets, but Instagram has made an online site where messages can be sent and photos can be liked however a user, now, isn’t able to post. This guide will provide you with the basic knowledge of how Instagram works and will enable you to go make your own account and become the next Insta sensation.

Features of Instagram

Posts:

These are the primary feature of Instagram and these are what people will see when they click on your profile and are led to your page. The content that is released is entirely up to you as it is your account but choosing old photos from the abyss of your photo gallery probably won’t cut it. Choosing a certain theme or style of photos/videos will help you stand out from among the crowd. Be yourself. Be unique! That is what will get you recognised in a crowded space.

Stories:

Instagram stories are posts that last for up to 24 hours. They can be videos or photos and you have the option to customize the post with text, GIFs, hand drawing or even music if you fancy. Instagram has added features that allow users to engage with their followers, like polls and questions , with which discussion points can be set and then you can interact with the responses as they wish. Stories are used to update followers on location, mood , or just to share music.

Settings:

Instagram has various settings which can enhance the user experience. Here’s a quick guide about the most important ones:

1. In order to access the settings menu, you must first navigate to your profile page, then click on the cog icon in the top left side of your screen. From here you can change many things.

2. The first of these is your notification settings. Various things can happen in the Instagram app such as people commenting or liking your photos. ‘Push notification settings’ allows you to control which of these things your phone will notify you about.

4. Here are the types of notifications you can control: Likes, comments, and comment likes (when someone likes a comment you’ve made on a photo). You can also decide whether you receive these notifications when anyone does a certain an action, when only people you follow do that action, or you can turn them off entirely.

5. You’re also able to link other accounts to your Instagram account, such as Facebook, twitter and Tumblr. This feature is very helpful if you use things other than just Instagram. It means that when you upload a new photo, it can also be automatically uploaded to your other social media accounts as well. For example, you upload a new image to Instagram and it will post the same photo to Facebook, including the caption.
